Update from School Council

Following our success in the Independent Public School (IPS) development process, the Principal, Karen Lockyer, and Chair of School Council, Kati Tonkin, attended the IPS launch on 21 October. The Premier and the Minister for Education were in attendance, along with the Director General of Education, Sharyn O’Neill. The Principal, Chair and members of the Administration have attended five transition workshops over the past few weeks which are designed to help us make the most of the opportunities that greater autonomy and collective responsibility will bring.

On 1 November we held our Annual Public Meeting. The specialist teachers presented reports on their programs and the Chair presented her annual report on the activities of School Council in 2016.

School Council Update Term 1

School Vision, Mission and Values

In 2014 staff, students and parents collaboratively developed a new vision for our school. This vision – Inspiring young minds, creating possibilities – along with the underlying mission statement and a draft set of values were released for parent feedback towards the end of the school year.

On the basis of this feedback, the values have been reduced from 8 to 4 and have been defined for our school context. The mission statement has also been refined. The new draft is attached below and School Council welcomes feedback from the whole school community. Please email your feedback to the Chair, Kati Tonkin: nppsschoolcouncil [at] gmail.com. Feedback should be received by Friday 20 March.

Religious Education Policy Draft

One of the functions of a School Council is to provide advice to the Principal on:

  1. a general policy concerning the use in school activities of prayers, songs and material based on religious, spiritual or moral values being used in a school activity as part of religious education; and
  2. allowing time for the special religious education of students in the school.

Following consultation with the school community in 2014, School Council has drafted the Religious Education Policy for NPPS and welcomes feedback from the school community. The draft is attached below. Please email comments to the Chair of School Council, Kati Tonkin, at the new School Council email address: nppsschoolcouncil [at] gmail.com.

All feedback must be received by Friday 20 March and will be considered by School Council at its next meeting on Monday 30 March.
