Our theme for the Term in Year 5 Room 13 is ‘Go for Gold’. Across all our subjects, students have been striving for gold in their learning.
We are enjoying learning about the Gold Rush through our class novel ‘New Gold Mountain’ by Christopher W Cheng. The book is a series of diary entries written from the perspective of a Chinese boy, Shu Cheong, mining on the Australian goldfields in 1860. We have learnt about different mining techniques, groups of people on the goldfields and the cultural tensions between these groups at the time.
As we read we learn new vocabulary words, such as province, commissioner, fortuitous, prosperous, and the list goes on! Last week, we performed skits using 18 of our new vocabulary words to practice our pronunciation and use of the words in context. It’s been great to see students already applying these words to their writing pieces.
