Year Five
Mr Helfand teaches the Year 5 class in Room 17

It is always very exciting at the start of a new school year and in Room 17, 2010 has commenced in fantastic style. The students are beginning to adjust to their new environment and teacher, they are starting to bond as a group and are producing some great work. As the whole school theme this term is sustainability, we are investigating the precious resource, water, and have started by studying the water cycle and water usage. We will progress to look at a variety of renewable energy sources and as a project later this term we will be examining the concept of a ‘solar chimney’. Our aim as a class will be to construct a scale model to demonstrate this idea.
Students in Year 5 will be taking part in national testing next term and we are continuing to develop the necessary skills in the core subjects of reading, writing, spelling, grammar and mathematics to enhance student confidence.
Room 17 will have their assembly this semester on Thursday 11 March. We are already starting to prepare and the students are enthusiastic. We have been lucky to receive the opportunity to study Chinese. Students are enjoying this new experience and it is lovely to hear them play with this new language.
